The B.Sc. Nursing programme completed one decennial year in the milestones of Westfort College of Nursing. The BSc Nursing in Kerala course is approved by Indian Nursing Council, Kerala Nurses and Midwives’ Council. It is affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences since 2010 admissions onwards. This institution follows the regulations of the affiliating University in determining the eligibility of candidates to undergo the course and conduct of curriculum,
examination and award of Degree.

PHILOSOPHY

Health is a state of well-being that enables a person to lead a physically, psychologically, socially and economically productive life. It is the right of all individuals and responsibility of individuals, families and communities towards maintaining their health. Nursing is a unique and vital Profession which contributes much to the Healthcare system in the country and abroad. It is based on values of caring, dignity and respect for rights of individuals and groups. The practice of Nursing is based on the application of basic concepts and principles and best evidence derived from physical, biological and behavioral sciences, medicine and Nursing.
The scope of nursing practice is wide and it encompasses preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative services to people across their lifespan in varied healthcare settings. We believe that undergraduate Nursing programme is a broad professional educational program which is offered to students through a well-defined curriculum which will enable students to assume different roles such as the caregiver, manager, leader, communicator, researcher etc. We the faculty of College of Nursing believe that the faculty has a definite role and responsibility in providing a conducive learning environment to students to bring excellence in their Professional Education and effect an excellent teaching-learning process across the professional span of life of undergraduate students. We also assume the responsibility to prepare the undergraduate students in such a way to further their education and develop a positive attitude and enthusiasm to fruitfully contribute to the Profession.

AIMS

Prepare graduate nurses to function in different settings including Hospitals, Community nursing services and available & emerging healthcare settings at various levels such as professional competent bedside nurses and midwives, nurse supervisor, nurse educators and nurse manager to provide promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.

  • Enable graduates to make independent decisions and become accountable in their professional practice, protect the rights of individuals and facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health and health-related matters.
  • Prepare graduate nurses to conduct and support research activities in the area of nursing practice and thereby to uplift consistently the standard of the profession.

OBJECTIVES

On completion of the undergraduate Nursing Education programme, the graduates will

  • Assess health status, identify nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate Nursing care for Patients/clients applying knowledge from nursing, medical allied sciences and alternative systems of medicines
  • Demonstrate competency in providing nursing care at various levels of health such as preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative based on scientific principles and concepts of health & illness, thereby contribute to the health of individuals, families and communities.
  • Participate as effective members of the health care delivery system imbibing the national health policies and programmes.
  • Demonstrate different essentials skills in nursing such as communication, interpersonal relationship, leadership, critical thinking, decision making and problem
    solving skills.
  • Demonstrate skills in teaching individuals and groups brought to the care by utilizing recent trends in science, technology and education
  • Demonstrate Managerial skills in the levels of their functioning.
  • Practice and preserve ethical values in their personal and professional life and disseminate the same to the fellow beings.
  • Participate in research activities and utilize research findings and improve the quality of service through evidence-based practice.
  • Recognize the need for continued, self-directed learning for their personal and professional development and enhance an attitude for life-long learning.

BSc Nursing in Kerala

ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary Examination of the Board of Higher Secondary Education, Kerala, or examinations recognized equivalent thereto by KUHS with 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English put together, are eligible.
  • Candidate has completed 17 years of age as on 31st December of the year of admission.
  • Candidate shall be medically fit.
